Brass Pedagogy Discussions Coordinated with the University of Utah

In coordination with BACBrass staff member Steve Bentley and the University of Utah, we are pleased to share a series of four brass discussions this month. Brass players of all levels are welcome to join these FREE 30 minute Zoom calls with four amazing trumpet players/teachers. Educators and players include Dr. J. Peyden Shelton of the University of Utah, Dr. Jason Bergman of Brigham Young University, Dr. Seretaa Hart of Brigham Young University, and Travis Peterson of the Utah Symphony. Each meeting will be held on Monday or Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. EST. Please see topics and schedule below.

5/11 Dr. J. Peyden Shelton – “Listening for a Better Performance”

Dr. Shelton currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of Utah’s School of Music. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, he was the 2014 winner of the National Trumpet Competition’s Graduate Soloist Division. Dr. Shelton has performed with the Utah Symphony, New World Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble

5/13 Dr. Jason Bergman – “Sounding Off: Using flow study approaches with fundamentals to improve sound”

Earning a DMA from the University of Michigan, Dr. Bergman currently serves as the Associate Professor of Trumpet at Brigham Young University School of Music. He also serves as Vice President/President – Elect of the International Trumpet guild and a regular adjudicator with the National Trumpet Competition Prior to his appointment Dr. Bergman was Trumpet professor at the renowned University of North Texas College of Music.

5/18 Dr. Seretaa Hart – Topic to be announced

Dr. Seretta Hart has been a professional trumpet player and teacher in Utah for over 14 years. She is currently an adjunct professor of Trumpet at Brigham Young University. As a trumpet performer, she plays with Ballet West, the Utah Symphony and the Orchestra at Temple Square among others. She completed her DMA in Trumpet Performance at the University of Utah in 2011, culminating in the world premier of “Scherzo” for trumpet and piano by Anthony Plog. Dr. Hart is the president of the Utah Trumpet Guild.

5/20 Travis Peterson – “Moving from drum corps playing back to the recital hall”

Travis is the current Principal Trumpet for the Utah Symphony. He was a member of the Madison Scouts, eight years later he earned Principle Trumpet with the Utah Symphony. Travis has played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra the Boston Pops and guest principal trumpet with the San Francisco symphony.
